FAQ's

What is an Athletic Therapist?

Athletic Therapy is a Healthcare Profession dedicated to the Assessment and Rehabilitation of orthopedic injuries. Utilizing contemporary techniques along with evidence based practice to provide patients the most advanced care possible.

What is your scope of practice?

Athletic Therapy education includes - human musculoskeletal system, exercise physiology, biomechanics, emergency care, orthopedic assessment, orthopedic rehabilitation, electrical modalities, brace fitting and external supports, manual therapy and concussion assessment & rehabilitation.

The 5 Subcategories of our Scope of Practice Include:

  • Injury Prevention
  • Orthopedic Assessment
  • Orthopedic Rehabilitation
  • Reconditioning
  • Emergency Recognition and Management

How are you similar/different from a physio / chiro / massage therapist?

While the scope of practice of each of these professions is quite similar, Athletic Therapists have the benefit of being specialized in one area of clinical rehabilitation.  The specialization of Athletic Therapists as musculoskeletal injury experts and only specializing in orthopedic injuries from the most acute phase to full return to high performance sport is what makes Athletic Therapy the right choice for every patient.

What value can you provide to a patient?

The largest value we can provide to a patient is having their health and goals in the forefront of every action we take. We provide single patient booking slots, so we are never seeing more than one patient at a time and focus all our efforts on their needs. We also encompass not only manual but also exercise therapy with every patient we see to ensure they have the tools they need to continue progressing outside the clinic and eventually graduate them from our services.

We have a strong interclinical referral system for cases that either need more than one therapist’s skill set, or when we know they will progress better with another practitioner. This also includes referrals outside of our clinic, we are building an extensive referral base with as many different health care providers that we can. Currently we are working with physicians, chiropractors, physiotherapists, osteopaths, registered dieticians, psychologists and counsellors in order to ensure any and all needs our patients may have are met.

Can you rehabilitate a patient with chronic shoulder pain, neck pain, back pain, and knee pain?

Chronic injuries of any type tend to be more complex than acute injuries and take longer to rehabilitate but we deal with them on a daily basis and have had a lot of success. Without going into the rehab process of each area mentioned above we tend to follow a similar framework. The key is taking a multi-faceted approach including both manual and exercise therapy to address the symptomatic area as well as a thorough assessment of the related structures. Educating our clients on what is occuring in their body, possible sensations they could be feeling or may feel through the process is also an integral part of our process.

Are you the go-to for any athletes?

With a specialization in sport injury, management and high performance treatment we treat many athletes in all capacities of their physical health. We have several notable clients, from university sports, team Canada Rugby, paralympic sledge hockey, Jr. A hockey, and even international basketball and NCAA athletes. We strive to provide services for all levels of athletes and do not change how we treat athletes at any level.

Do you see WCB cases?

Fortitude will certainly see WCB cases, however getting coverage for appointments with Fortitude’s practitioners is a tougher project.   Typically is necessary to get special permission to have an Athletic Therapist work on WCB clients and be covered for the appointment.

Do you see post-MVA cases?

Patients who have been in a Motor Vehicle Accident can come see Fortitude practitioners as Certified Athletic Therapists are Primary Care Providers.  Under section B of their benefits in Alberta a WAD1 (whiplash associated disorder) is approved for 10 appointments and a WAD2 or WAD3 is approved for 21 appointments.  We at Fortitude can fill out the AB1 for the client to submit to the insurance provider.  Injuries falling outside of the WAD relm will be subject to insurance approval for any practitioner but patients are covered for a maximum of $10 000.00 pending approval from their insurance provider.  Once benefits are used we can complete and submit a AB4 for consideration for approval of more appointments.  These forms can all be completed by Fortitude.
